In a vibrant, thriving classroom, learning is not just something students hear, it’s something they see, touch, and experience. When we lean into this multisensory approach, we unlock something incredible: stronger, longer-lasting connections in the brain. This is the power of using manipulatives in instruction, and at Teach BIG, we are passionate about weaving manipulatives consistently into every learning experience. They aren’t just cute extras; they are essential tools that help make learning meaningful, memorable, and measurable for students of every age, especially English language learners (ELLs).

Research shows that when students interact with concepts through multiple senses, hearing instructions, seeing models, and physically touching materials, their brains form deeper and more durable pathways for understanding. Every time a student picks up a manipulative, they aren’t just moving an object. They are building a bridge between abstract ideas and real-world understanding.

For English language learners, this bridge is even more critical. ELLs are navigating two challenges at once: mastering new academic content and acquiring a new language. Manipulatives give them a visual and tactile anchor that spoken or written words alone cannot provide. Whether it’s moving letter tiles to form words, using fraction circles to understand parts of a whole, or organizing sequencing cards to tell a story, manipulatives make learning visible and concrete. They create an immediate entry point for participation and comprehension, even when language might otherwise be a barrier.

However, manipulatives are not just for young students or early learners. Their effectiveness spans all ages. High school students benefit from grammar sorting activities, algebraic tiles, graphic organizers, and 3D models in science. Adults learning a second language or pursuing vocational training also show stronger retention when manipulatives are used. The human brain never outgrows its craving for multisensory learning experiences. Touch, sight, and sound working together fuel the brain’s ability to organize and retrieve information. When we provide physical interactions with content, we are respecting and responding to how the brain is naturally wired to learn.

This understanding is why Teach BIG intentionally infuses manipulatives throughout our entire framework. Whether students are tackling complex grammar, mastering phonics, breaking down reading comprehension, or developing writing fluency, manipulatives are embedded every step of the way. In Teach BIG classrooms, students aren’t passively receiving information, they are actively building it, moving it, manipulating it, and making it their own.

Manipulatives also help bring the CRAFT portion of the Teach BIG mission statement to life. CRAFT refers to the expertise and artistry teachers must develop to truly make instruction powerful. Master teachers don’t just deliver information; they craft learning experiences that stick. They know when to shift from lecture to hands-on discovery, from explanation to exploration. Manipulatives are a vital tool in that crafting process. They allow teachers to design lessons that aren’t simply told, they’re experienced.

Think about it: when students physically build a sentence with word cards, they internalize grammar patterns far more deeply than if they merely read about them. When they model the water cycle with moving pieces, they remember each phase because they participated in it, not just memorized it. Crafting these experiences is what moves classrooms from compliance to creativity, from surface understanding to true mastery.

In Teach BIG, manipulatives are not an afterthought. They are not reserved for “when we have time.” They are strategic necessities that help all students, and especially English language learners, grasp concepts with confidence. They transform abstract ideas into concrete understanding. They unlock language barriers. They empower students to think critically, collaborate, and communicate effectively. Most importantly, they turn everyday lessons into unforgettable journeys of discovery.

Teachers, when you bring manipulatives into your instruction, you are not “babying” your students or “making it easy.” You are making it real. You are honoring the cognitive science of how learning happens best. And you are giving every student, regardless of age, background, or language, a fighting chance to achieve greatness.

At Teach BIG, we believe that when you combine deep content knowledge with the crafted, hands-on experiences that manipulatives create, you are truly lighting the way for students to thrive. You’re not just teaching a subject, you’re teaching in a way that lasts a lifetime.

So roll out the manipulatives, make learning tangible, and watch the sparks of understanding fly!
