TBASE is the Teach BIG Automated Scoring Engine. It pairs interactive writing tools with ASE/AI essay scoring, so students practice the moves of strong ECR writing and teachers get feedback aligned to STAAR/SST on every paper.
Students build a thesis, which is the central idea, choose the strongest evidence, and explain how it proves the idea. When they submit, TBASE returns a holistic score with extensive feedback that points to a clear next step.

TBASE serves Grades 3 to 8 writing, from first constructed responses in the lower grades to full ECR essays with paired Teach BIG passages in the upper grades. Scoring expectations match STAAR/SST at every level.

We scored every released TEA STAAR/SST Grade 3 to 5 extended constructed response sample paper from 2024, 2025, and 2026 on the live TBASE and compared each score with the official state score.
On average TBASE is within a tenth of a point of the state in every year, so it does not lean high or low.
